How important is it to have a "walking foot" when quilting?
I cant find one for my cheap-o Brother LS30 basic sewing machine.
Well, if guiltmaking is in your heart and soul, I guess it is time to go shopping! For quilting on the quilt top, the walking foot allows for the thickness of your backing, batting and quilt top. Keeps it form shifting. As a a beginner, you usually do your straight work with the walking foot. As experience progresses, you can do line work with freemotion, that is feed dogs down and a small hopping foot but takes lots of practice to get straight lines that way.
The clincher for me, I cannot apply the bindings smoothly and evenly w/o the walking foot. It will bunch up in places. Everytime.
On the other hand, my mother never used a walking foot in the dozen or so quilts she made in her lifetime and feels it is not needed. But believe me it showed in her work! Puckers on the back....
