Which brand of sewing machine would you choose if you had to choose between Bernina and Pfaff?

I want to buy a basic sewing machine (stitching, zig-zag, buttonholes, etc). If you had to choose between Bernina and Pfaff, which brand would you choose? Are the new Bernettes as reliable as the old Bernina sewing machines (30 years ago)?

Bernettes are, I believe, badged machines, made for Bernina, but not by Bernina. Just like Husky is Viking's badged machines, and I think Hobby is Pfaff's badged line.

Of the two-- Pfaff and Bernina -- I'd take Pfaff most likely, because the presser feet are not as outrageously expensive as Bernina. And then again, I've never met a Bernina I bonded with -- but I can happily sew at any Pfaff or Viking I've ever tried. Bernina partisans will disagree with me. Either way, you'll have good machine, particularly if you do a little extra research at places like the machine reviews at http://www.patternreview.com

FWIW, I've heard some good things about the Bernina 1008 mechanical from people I trust. Myself, I prefer electronic machines because of the stepper motors, but a good mechanical will outlast an electronic.

Dual feed, btw, is now also available on at least one other make of machine, Janome, as Accufeed. I don't find it particularly useful compared to learning good fabric handling techniques (try Margaret Islander's videos, particularly Industrial Shortcuts).

Have a Brother embroidery machine... how do I choose and use software to make unique designs to embroider?

My husband bought me a used Brother embroidery machine. I am new to the WHOLE sewing/embroidery thing, and have tons to learn. I wanted to know if there is free software out there that will allow me to design new things to embroider? How do I go about making these things on the software and then getting it to the machine?? I'm totally confused with all this and incredibly overwhelmed! I want to have fun!

There may not be free software to download to create your own designs. Vista is ok to have when purchasing your digitizing software. Brother have some easy to use programs, such as PED Lite and PE Design. But you dont have to buy 'Brother' software.
.art designs are Bernina files, and unfortunately, you cannot use them unless you have bernina branded software. Stick to downloading designs in .pes format. Embroidery is so much fun, and there is always something to do!!! I use husqvarna viking software and i find this really easy, and it does a lot! and i use this with my brother embroidery machine.
Digitizing is the process in which you get your image into 'stitch points', basically telling the needle where to go, and what direction and form the stitch needs to be. Its not easy, but if you love art, and love the computer- you'll love this!
Ask your husband if the shop/place he bought it from offers lessons, or classes on the software and machine. i'm sure they can give you tons of advice! Happy Sewing!!!!!!!

How much does the Brother Innov-is 80 cost?

My local dealer has it on sale for $599, I think that is high. Brother also has a $75 rebate on the machine if purchased from an authorised dealer prior to the end of this month. A little help. I would love to find a dealer to sell this machine on line cheaper but Brother makes them sign a contract and they can only sell local, charge what they want. There are a couple more project runway machines by brother you can check them out at Amazon.com. The other two can be shipped and look nice, too. I know I fell in love with the Innovis 80 for a tote around machine just not sure if I want to pay that much. It is only 14 pounds and you have to purchase quilting 1/4 foot, table and some extras if you want them.
If you go to the brother.com web site, you can print out a pdf file of the manual to look at for the innovis 80. Good luck!

Brother sewing machine bobbin problem?

I have a Brother sewing machine. sound track editing project CE5000. Every time I try 3 son began to sew out the bobbin. and I know I saw this right and I know know that the machine is threaded correctly. When I take the extra fabric on a thread Bulk is out there that came from the bobbin. It happens every time! What's wrong? This is the second machine I acquired and they both did, so it must be something im doing.

Turn off the machine and remove the needle (safety first case! -). Remove the needle plate and bobbin case will show how the machine in order to recover properly taken. Carefully clean away from a thread that got into the machine. - Replace the bobbin and bobbin case, being that the wire coil is fed from the spool reel correct direction and through correct check your guides. Manuel Replace the needle and the presser foot up - re-thread the machine. Thread the machine while still with the presser foot up - Manuals does not reflect, but mostly this is what causes the dysfunction sewing.
