Serger Sewing Machines How to Sew: Using a Serger : Introduction to the Serger Sewing Machine
What is a good serger sewing machine?
I am starting a business sewing diapers, wipes, fleece diaper covers, fleece pants and various other baby related items. I have a Brother Runway Edition Sewing machine that I got from Walmart for around $140 and it works well. But I want to get a serger. The problem is that I know really nothing about them so I don't know which one to get. I only have about $300 to spend on one right now. I know that they go up a lot higher than that, but that is really all I can spend right now. In the future I hope to get a more expensive one. Any suggestions on where to get one, a specific brand or model?
There is one at Walmart for $200 it is a Singer. I was thinking about getting this one, but I am unsure because I have heard mixed reviews.
Oh and just to add, there is no place around here to buy a used machine.
Any advice is appreciated.
I am fond of Juki sergers. I have a four thread mechanical machine that does its job consistently. It's the Juki MO654 DE. It's only been the shop once, when I knocked the timing out of whack. Juki also makes industrial machines and my experience as a technician is that they spend little time in the repair shop. I found mine on E-bay. It was brand new and drop shipped from the manufacturer.
Eventually, you're going to need an industrial machine. They are designed for production work such as you describe in your question. Be sure to keep your machine clean and lubricated. Fleece and flannel can produce copious amounts of lint and that makes any sewing machine grumpy.

Mechanical Sewing Machine Setting up your sewing machine
Trouble raising bobbin thread on Singer Esteem II Sewing Machine!?
I have tried for about 4 hours to figure out how to raise the bobbin thread on my Singer Esteem II machine. I am brand new to sewing machines and conveniently the user's manual AND instructional video SKIP what you do once you insert the bobbin in the bobbin case. I just have this one detail left! I insert the bobbin case, but I'm not sure what to do with the 6"-8" of loose thread on the bobbin and then when I turn the dial to lower and raise the needle, it's supposed to bring up the thread from the bobbin, but all that happens when I lower the needle is the thread gets wrapped around all of the mechanical parts below. No thread is ever raised at all by the needle from the bobbin. Since I have no experience, I don't even know what to check or fix. I did tighten and loosen the tension, but that does nothing. ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED!!!
Try starting from the beginning. Take all the thread out of/off of the machine. Put a piece of fabric or paper under the presser foot, drop the presser foot, and rotate the handwheel on the right side. Stick a piece of tape on it to remind you which way to rotate the handwheel to cause the machine to feed fabric from the front to the back.
Rethread the machine from scratch, following the manual step by step. Make sure you raise the presser foot before you start threading -- it opens the upper tension so the thread can get in. Otherwise, you'd get loops on the bottom of the fabric when you start to sew.
Rethread the bobbin... then follow the instructions below.
http://singerco.com/resources/bobbin.html
Basically, you need to turn the handwheel in the direction that would cause fabric to feed from the front to the back of the machine AND the needle needs to be in right way around -- backwards needles often won't pick up thread (and if they do, the sewing machine will skip stitches).
6-8" of loose bobbin thread seems a bit much in my experience. Try shortening the thread end to 2-3" and try again. Don't forget to hang on to that needle thread tail while you're lowering the needle. And review the threading of the upper portion of the machine.
The other possibility is that your machine's needle is slightly damaged -- even a slight curve can cause problems in stitch formation, not to mention a needle that's not completely up in the needle clamp, or a needle of the wrong needle system.
A distant (but still not impossible) problem is that the machine may not have been properly timed. Resetting timing is not a DIY job for a newbie, and if you believe your new machine is out of time, I'd return it.
Here's how to tell about timing: http://sewusa.com/Sewing_Machine_Repair/Sewing Machine Hook Timing.htm (I suspect you've got a vertical rotary hook)
Do you know anyone who sews? That's probably the fastest way to see if it's a machine problem or a newbie problem. And that's why I like to see newbies buy machines from a sewing machine dealer who can get them through the early machine operation stages.
Don't mess with the bobbin tension (wait till you've got some significant experience). Reset the top tension back to 4 if you've been messing with it... that's normal tension for most fabrics, most stitches.
