I would like to learn to make quilts. Maybe just baby blankets to start with. I am not new to sewing but definately not a pro. I used to sew when I was a child but havent laid my hands on a sewing machine since. I just got one and would like to start doing something with it. Any suggestions?
First, learn the features of the new machine - this is important no matter the level of experience.
Set down at the new machine, with the manual open and start with the bobbin winding through the maintenance instructions. Read and apply each step of every feature.
Does the machine have a feature that lets you adjust the needle position. This can be helpful when sewing the standard 1/4" seam for quilt making.
Did the machine come with a 1/4" foot - if not, this can be purchased where sewing machine accessories are sold.
Another accessory that is very important to have is a walking foot. This foot attaches to the presser foot bar with the screw that is holding the presser foot adapter (if this machine has snap-on feet). This accessory helps keep the layers of fabric from shifting when they are being sewn.
You can view the 1/4" foot and even feed/walking foot here - http://www.singerco.com/support/presser_help.html
Start with the basic quilting 101 - pre-wash, press, cut and stitch.
A simple block quilt with borders would be an easy first quilt. It can be a baby quilt or a lap quilt. Both are approximately the same size.

There are many tips and techniques here (I especially like the quilt calculator) - http://www.quiltbug.com/Articles/learn.htm

PS: It does not matter if you make mistakes when making your first quilt - I did and the quilt is still a treasure to me!

Would a single bed quilt be way too big for a cot bed or would it do ok?
We got our daughter a Dora cot bed and just wondering if a single bed quilt would be too big or ok ? anyone know? xx its dimensions are 140x70cms
It would be way too big and a safety issue. She could easily tangle up in that and not be able to get it off if she does causing her to suffocate.
