Can I machine quilt squares and then put together to form quilt?

I don't have a long arm quilting machine and I'm trying to figure out an easy to way to make a quilt (and machine quilt it)

You don't need a long arm machine in order to machine quilt. As long as the sewing machine has a walking foot or darning foot, you can quilt it. Use a regular foot to piece together the quilt top. make the 'sandwich', and then starting in the middle of the quilt, quilt either straight lines with the walking foot, or free motion quilting with the darning foot. If the quilt is lap size or twin size, just roll of the edges to make it easier to maneuver while quilting. Anything larger than twin might get a little bulky and you'll need some patience to keep stopping and pushing the quilt around, but it can be done. I've machine quilted a few queen size quilts on a regular quilting machine that only had an extension table. A little frustrating at times, but it can be done.

How to sell my quilting patterns. ?

I design quilt patterns, and also do long arm quilting, and my long arm quilting customers have asked me where they can purchase my quilting patterns at. I've been thinking... is it legal to go into local quilting supply stores to see if they would like to purchase at wholesale? The local small businesses are independently owned and not a franchise... is this legal or would I need special licenses?

If you design these patterns and want to protect them there are several ways of doing that, copyright is one way but that cost money. The simple way to hold protection is to mail yourself a copy of your pattern, do not open it when you receive it, before mailing on the back side of the envelope across the seal write the name or ID of the pattern. This is referred to as the poor mans copyright. Your mail will have a postmark with a date on it if any one should use your product with out your consent you will have documentation in the event you have to go to court to collect damages. As far as selling your product, you should not do it till you protect your product first. Kinko’s will help you with producing your patterns to print, make sure you write the pattern name or ID on the copies you are making copied exactly as you have it on the back of the envelope. Gene

how long does it take to free motion quilt

How long does it take to quilt an entire quilt top with a long arm quilting machine? I am looking for an estimate for a standard double quilt with a simple stiple. Thanks

To just do an mid-size overall stipple should not take longer than 8 working hours. I did not figure in the time it takes to get the quilt layered on the frame and breakes the quilter will take (not to get to tense standing behind the frame).
If you are asking this, because you want somebody to do the quilting for you, check around to see how different quilters price their work and ask to look at samples of their work. Best way to get references is to check local quilt shops (most of them have business cards of local longarm quilters). Most quilters don't charge by time, but calculate by design and square inch. A simple design (overall stipple or pantograph) will cost you less per square inch than a custom quilt job.

For myself I found it cheapest to purchase my own mid arm machine that I use as a table top set-up to do my own quilting. The machine has paid for itself after custom quilting three large quilt tops.
