How to Master Basic Sewing Projects : How to Sew Your Bag With a Sewing Machine

How to get a straight stitch on my sewing machine, euro pro model :7500?
for some reason i went on euro pro's site and i entered the model number and the sewing machine doesnt exist, and that's exactly what the model number says on my machine. anyway, i need help achieveing the original straight stitch, the one that looks like this.... - - - - - - - - . I achieved it in the past with my machine but i cant seem to remember what tension, width and length to set it at, can anyone help ?
Not sure about your particular machine, but a typical setting on most machines for a straight stitch on something like shirt weight fabric would be upper tension about 4, stitch width 0, stitch length 3 mm
Straight stitch on most modern machines is just the degenerate case of zigzag -- the width is simply taken to 0 so there is no needle swing. Upper tension is typically 4 for construction stitches, but will vary from about 3 to 5 to get a balanced stitch. If you're having to go down to 2 or up to 6 to get a balanced stitch with dressmaker weight thread, it's probably time for a professional servicing. Stitch length is dependent on fabric thickness... thicker fabrics need longer stitches. 3 mm is fairly normal for shirt weight fabrics, while you might use 4-5 mm for something like a heavy denim. Ready to wear clothing is a fairly reliable guide to stitch length -- find something that's sewn in similar weight fabrics and measure the stitch length.
One thing a lot of newbies do is to take teeny tiny stitches because they don't want the seam to come apart. (It won't!). What happens is something called "thread jamming" or "seam jamming" -- there's just so much thread being forced into a seam by the short stitches that the seam then puckers and looks unbeautiful. If you see a puckering seam, one of the first things to try is to increase the stitch length.
Don't forget to get a copy of your manual -- you need it not just for how to use the machine, but how and where to clean and oil it, what size needles it can use, etc.
