Triple Irish Chain Baby Quilt - Pt 2

a baby girl?
my best friend is due in december and she's having a girl. I dont' know what to get my friend or the baby. i was thinking of makign a quilt. but what else could i do that is not a simple gift.
the only thing they told me was the babies room is fairy themed if that helps
The coolest thing is a diaper cake! You can use the theme of the room as the decorations on the cake, and it is useful since its made of diapers. I have made 2 and they have been a huge hit at the baby showers I have been to. If I knew how to put a picture on here I would send it to you so you could see the one I did for my niece. You buy a large package of diapers, which ever kind the person uses, I personally used swaddlers by pampers just because they were white on one and I used pampers babydry on the other because it was my first one. You roll up the diapers in a roll and tie them with yarn or ribbon, my cakes had almost a hundred diapers on them. You could use newborn and size one since those are the smallest ones and usually the diapers are giant on most babies. Then you put things in the middle of the cake, in layers. Like my first layer was a box of sensitive baby wipes and then you arrange the diapers around them and make it round shaped and you tie all around that layer, I found yarn works well cause it is cheaper can get it in lovely shades of pink and then you put another something on top of the box of wipes and surround that with diapers and tie them and make that layer smaller than the bottom one for this layer I used a baby wash and some diaper cream. Then you could put a pack of onesies in the next layer up and put the diapers around those in a smaller circle than the previous. The top layer I used some hand sanitizers for kids that I got from bath and body works and surrounded them by the rest of the diapers and tied around all those to keep it in place. For the top I bought little anklet socks, the ones with lace around the cuffs and rolled them to look like roses and got some of that curly ribbon and topped the cake off with that. Then I got some embelishments like ribbon and baby diaper pins, bibs that say I love my mommy and another that said I love my daddy and pinned them on the thicker ribbon. I used some other ribbon to tie travel sized soaps and lotions to hang around the edges as well. I got fancy ribbon and put it around the bottom of the cake edges and when all is said and done it looks like a wedding cake and gets so many compliments that you know its the best gift ever. I used a flat board to carry it on with the base wrapped in a baby receiving blanket. I think I also hung some small toys like teethers and rattles on it as well. It will take a couple hours of nonstop work to get it done, but it helps immensely. You can google diaper cakes and get some more ideas on how to make it, if you give me your email address I will send you a pic of mine as I was working on it and after it was finished. As far as the quilt, I might wait until the babys first birthday and see if the mom will give you some of the special outfits that the baby has outgrown and use some of those as parts of the quilt. My sister in law actually used some of my baby blanket and added it to a quilt for my daughter and it means everything to me. Good luck and congrats to your friend! Also another idea is to try to take a picture of the babys hands or feet or the mom and dad holding the babys hand and crop everything except their hands out of the picture and frame it.
