Serger Demo: the Evolution by Baby Lock
Can my regular sewing machine do overlock stitch like the Serger?
I have a regular sewing machine. It's a singer 40 stitch machine. It has a stitching on there that kind of looks like it could be the overlock stitch (something the serger does -- stitch and cut), but I will have to manually cut the fabric and it doesn't really "overlock" the fabric. I know sergers are design to only overlock, I want a regular sewing machine but was wondering if I can buy an extra piece or attachment to have this effect of the overlocking and cutting. Im not sure if they even make that. Can someone please help?
Singer (did? does?) make an attachment called "cut and sew" or "side cutter" for at least some of their machines -- the idea was to make the machine sew more like a serger. Unfortunately, I've never found anyone who was happy with the way they worked.
Check with local sewing machine dealers, and see if they've got one you can try out before you buy.
I do a lot of serger construction, and I wouldn't find the sewing machine attachments of much use to me... sewing machines are slower, they lack differential feed -- just not something that would help my sewing much.
You might consider simply trimming the seam allowances on the pattern down to a few mm for seams you want to mock-serge. Then the seam allowance is pre-trimmed, and you only have to set up the stitch width so the right swing of the needle barely falls off the edge of the fabric. No post-sewing trimming.
