Rag Quilt Help Needed?
I want to make a rag quilt in a really quick and easy way. I have thought about getting "layer cakes" which are precut cotton 10X10 squares. Since these would have a zigag type of edge, I am wondering how well the edges will ravel once clipped. I have made one heavy flannel rag quilt but my sewing machine needles cannot take the thickness ~ I broke 2 on my last project.... I am anxious to try out a cotton rag quilt with a flannel inside square for batting. Thoughts????
I am a new quilter & sewer, I am teaching myself so I am learning as I go. I do not know the gauge of needle ~ where do I get that info? The machine was a gift and it came with a pack of needles ~ when one broke I just replaced it with another.
I am really just wondering if you think a zig zag type of edge will ravel up. Lets say I find flannel precut squares and used that instead ~ when I clip the edges and wash & dry it so you think it would still ravel nicely?

We make quilts. I wouldn't go through the trouble unless you fold the edges under.
I went through a lot of trouble collecting and cutting Levi jeans, cut it all up, sewing it together. It made a beautiful quilt until it was washed. The edges all started coming out, it was a mess, a lot of work for nothing.
Use a heavy "Jean" needle, about an 18. Most machines won't handle a 20 or 21, I have one that will. The cheaper Euro=Pro, sold through Penny's will sew through four layers, even five, blue jeans.
