Is a beginner sewing machine good enough for quilting?
I saw on the materials list for beginners a special "foot" for the sewing machine. Is that a necessary item.
I have a beginners Brother that is sooooo basic.
You are talking about machine quilting. That's the fast way of doing it these days. Some who aren't beginners will go back and add in hand quilted sections to add a bit more to the quilt.
Machine quiltling is tricky in that you are sewing three levels together. A front pieced section, a middle batting section and a back piece which is usually solid and one piece. The special foot you are talking about feeds the top of the quilt through the machine at the same rate as the bottom piece is going through. It makes putting the three layers together easier..
It's not hard to do it without the special foot but your mistakes will increase. You may have more puckers showing on the back side. It's not impossible. I've never used the feeder foot. I concentrated on going slow and keeping my layers going through by guiding and tugging all the layers at the same rate.
Best advice I can give you is to start small!!!!! The bigger the project the harder it is to get it through the machine without puckers. It's fun to learn though!
