What's the difference between a sewing machine and a serger?
Hey!
I have a brother sewing machine and I do such projects as making clothes and pilliows and what not's. I was wondering what should I need to know about sergers that are a difference from sewing machines. Thanks
Here's my standard answer on beginner sewing machines: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?…
Sergers (aka overlocks) are different machines... the major function is to sew, overcast and remove the seam allowance in one step. They do seams and some decorative work very well... they don't do buttonholes at all, and I don't care for the look of serged zippers.
They're sort of the microwaves of the sewing world... they speed up construction, but you've got to know what you're doing or you wreck the project quite quickly. That said, I've taught a couple of beginners who've just gotten to the stage of sewing straight seams on a sewing machine how to use a serger -- and they just took off and ran with it. But the projects they're making are mostly things without buttonholes and zippers (one is making knit clothes, the other is making tote bags.) If a serger sounds interesting, go see how one works, and then stop over at the yahoo group "sergers" and we'll talk you through the pros and cons of various types of sergers and how they might or might not fit what you want to do.
