Why does my serger sewing machine keep un-threading the upper needles?
When I run the fabric through my serger, the needles come un-threaded. In other words, the thread pulls out of one f the two needles, if that makes any sense. Usually the left needle, but sometimes the right. Someone suggested I loosen the thread tension, however trying this did not help. Also, I tried holding down the thread when I started my seam and I broke a needle so I've learned not to do that anymore. I've never used a serger before.
The least little miscue can cause the serger not to work as it should.
Refer to the manual to be sure the needles are correctly in place (usually with the flat side of the shaft to the back).
Raise the antenna to it's highest position.
Set the tensions to zero (just for threading).
Turn the handwheel until the loopers reach their highest position (there may be an alignment marking on the side of the machine and handwheel - match those if they are on your machine).
Thread the serger in the order given in the manual or on the threading guide, which is usually printed on the inside of the serger door, or on the front of the serger.
Reset the tension back to about mid-range.
Lower the presser foot and stitch a chain of thread. If it is knitted together as it should be, then the serger should work.
Service for a serger begins at about $100, plus parts and knives, if needed.
