Multi Needle Quilt Machine

I want to make a quilt for my son do I have to use a machine?
I want to make a quilt for my baby, I know machines will make things much faster but I don't have the money lol so has anyone ever made a quilt by sewing by hand?
Any tips or advice
Quilts have always been, and still are made this way. Some just prefer to use a sewing machine.
Seams are typically 1/4", but if you want a wider seam, it is okay as long as you add the extra to the pattern and then stay constant when making the seams.
You need to use small stitches.....not as small as a sewing machine, but small enough that there are no gaps in the seam
Once the quilt is together, stitch the three layers together along the seams to further reinforce the quilt and to keep the layers from shifting.
Some prefer to tie the layers together with embroidery floss, but this is not a good idea for a baby quilt.
You will need a few sharp needles - thread them all and you will not have to stop as often to re-thread.
Then run the thread through bee's wax (sold with quilting supplies) to keep the thread from twisting and knotting as you sew.
Protect your fingers with a thimble or this product, which I prefer as it can be used over and over and is not awkward like the traditional thimble - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0012S4X3E/sr=8-1/qid=1268922832/ref=olp_product_details?ie=UTF8&me=&qid=1268922832&sr=8-1&seller=
You can find a lot of helpful information here - http://quilting.about.com/od/stepbystepquilting/u/how_to_make_a_quilt.htm
Do not let all this overwhelm you - just start out with fabric that you like - prewash it to remove the chemical process leftover from manufacturing; iron, cut, stitch, press, combine with the batting and backing, and finish as you wish.
Great Grandma did not have books and the Internet (lucky her) and did very well on her own.
