Sewing Machine Comparison?
Ok, so all of my husbands siblings and I are planning on purchasing a sewing machine for my mother-in-law for Christmas. We've got a fairly small budget as far as sewing machines go and none of us really know anything about sewing machines.
I've done some basic research and discovered that avoiding Singer and Brother were in our best interests. So in the opinions of you sewers out there, is a Janome Magnolia 7318 or a Bernette 65 by Bernina the better way to go?
She's an intermediate-advanced sewer, and right now she's working on about a 20 year old machine that's about to break down..
Any advice you have would be very much appreciated.

Viking is still making great machines, and as far as I can gather so is Janome. Singer has begun using plastic parts inside, so my ten year old machine is the last Singer I'll ever buy. Not to mention Singer changes the shank constantly, so if you don't buy all the presser feet and other accessories from day one, you will regret it later on down the road.
My college uses Janome machines in the labs, and I am honestly surprised at how well they have weathered the abuse of beginner students. They have had the same set of machines for years now, with only a little bit of maintenance. I'm considering buying a Janome when my Singer gives up the ghost.
