Making a double sided t-shirt quilt?
I've made a one sided tshirt quilt where the back is just a flannel backing. But, now I have 12 tshirts that have a theme on the front and a list of names on the back. My son would like me to make the quilt double sided so the front and back align. Any suggestions? I fuse a backing to each and then sew them together with sashing on both sides? Or do I make two quilts and have the quilter quilt them together on her long arm machine with the batting in between? Help - I'm not an expert.
Hello! I make t-shirt quilts as a home business, and I had wondered the same thing. Since I couldn't find any information, I finally just dove in and made one. I basically made 2 quilt tops the same size, except on the side that was to be the back I made the bottom border a couple inches longer. The reason I made it a little longer, is that I didn't want to end up short when quilting it with my mid-arm quilting machine. I was able to keep the sides aligned on my frame and it turned out just fine! I just used an all-over meander pattern when quilting. I think long arm quilters (and I do, too!) prefer the backing to be several inches larger to allow for the fabric drawing up as it's being quilted. You could also make the side borders on the back a little wider to help with this. Just keep the top borders the same size, because that is usually the side that is lined up and loaded onto the quilting frame first.
