Sewing Machine Techniques : How to Sew Leather

Does the Singer 215G sewing machine sew leather?
I'm not real familiar with that particular model, but I believe it is a Featherweight model. The trick with sewing on leather is to use a needle designed to sew on leather. I am particular to Schmetz sewing needles and they have a really good one for leather. Leather needles have a different point than ordinary needles so they can cut through the leather. If you are sewing a thinner leather, though, you can also try using a needle designed for denim, in a 90/14 0r 100/16. Sew slowly at any rate. Leather can be sticky stuff for the machine to feed through as well, and a bit of baby powder will help it not stick to the throat plate as it goes through. You can also sew with a piece of paper on the underside to help with sticky problems as well.
Keep in mind whatever you use- leather needle or regular heavy sharp, the needle is going to make and leave a permanent hole in the leather. There is no erasing mistakes with leather. Use double sided sticky tape or a washable glue stick to hold things in place for sewing, and consider using overlaped seams when possible. And let the machine feed the leather through at it's own pace- don't try to pull it through at all. Aside from breaking the needle, it will tear the hole larger than it has to be.
Singer makes a good machine, so it should have the uumph to puncture the leather if it has a leather needle or a good sharp heavy duty denim needle. A regular leather needle should see through the average job, but you should have at least two just in case it dulls or breaks. You will want a full pack of regular denim needles, they will dull faster and break easier. A sewing machine dealer should have them both in stock, and given the choice, go for the leather needle over the denim. Good luck with the leather project!
