What kind of fabric can I use to make a valence?
I do very little sewing but I do have an old machine. I figure I can sort out how to do this. In case you want to suggest a color too, I have beige walls, beige carpet, a navy blue leather sofa and medium colored wood end tables, book cases. Would a lighter blue work? There are 5 windows about 60 inches wide and about 68 in length. A 18 inch valence? Thanks for all ideas. PS I want to avoid a real expensive drpaery material in case I mess it up.
Valances are easy! They are pretty much just straight sewing. I often buy fabric at Walmart; they usually have a clearance table with stuff for $1 or $2 a yard, so check there!
18" might look a little "skimpy" on such a large window. Experiment with some different widths before you commit. Also depends on where the rod is hung in relation to the window. Some rods are up the wall quite a bit higher and that would dictate a longer valance to cover. What I've done is just take a piece of material and fold it in different lengths and hang it over the rod and see what I like. I have a lot of narrow, tall windows and an 18" valance looks way too short on them but on my kitchen windows which are a different shape, they are fine.
Don't forget to add for your rod pocket on the top, a nice hem on the bottom and side seams. The standard width when figuring material for curtains and such is 2 time the width of the window. However, if I'm using a print that I want to show with less interruption from the folds of material, I have done 1 1/2 times.
Pay attention to which way the pattern runs on your material. If it runs side to side, you will have to have extra material to match patterns and piece smaller panels together so that your print will be running the "right" way. If it runs the length of the fabric, you won't.
Personally, I'd look for some type of pattern with the navy and beige in it along with some other colors, perhaps your light blue. You have a lot of neutral colors in the room and could use some color and texture.
Good luck! Take your time, think it through all the way before you start, take the extra time to finish your edges properly and your curtains will look great!
