Sewing Machines for beginners?
I have read all the comments on sewing machines and it seems everyone thinks the janome is the best for beginners.I am also thinking of going to a dealer but is having mixed feelings because the janome is quite different from juki which i use in school. I was wondering does it matter what kind of machine you use as a beginner and if the janome could be used to make ready-to-wear clothing.
If you're used to Jukis, I don't think you'll find Janome really much different, unless you're sewing on industrials at school. Juki home sewing machines are not widely distributed in the US; Janomes are.
Beginners often need a bit more hand holding and
"how to use a sewing machine" than someone who's had a bit of experience needs -- it's easier to find someone selling Janome who can do that for you. But you may not need it.
I don't have a lot of experience with Juki home sewing machines-- basically some trial sewing at a trade show. I just don't know how to evaluate their durability without more experience, but what I saw I liked. (And fwiw, I think Juki makes some of the best home sergers -- and I own one and use it all the time.) Generally, school machines are tough as nails, so if your school is using Jukis, I'd guess they're fairly durable.
Why not go try some Janomes at a dealer, and try some more Jukis, too, if you can. Then make up your mind. That's why dealers offer demonstrators.
And if your budget stretches some more, try some of the higher end sewing machines, too, from brands like Viking, Bernina, Pfaff.... see what suits the way you use a machine. I, for instance, have never met a Viking or Pfaff that didn't feel familiar to me the minute I started to sew on them. Berninas, which are very good machines indeed, are just enough "wrong" for me that I feel like I've got 10 thumbs when sewing on them. It's like buying shoes... I may know your size, but I can't judge for you if a particular shoe is going to fit your foot. You're going to have to try it on to find out.
