Hi, everyone! Still dithering about a sewing machine. Need some more advice. Help please? dottievan?
I was really helped by the last help offered...it was awesome!!!I've still not made a final decisiion, however, as I'm a retired educator and have to mind my finances extremely closely. I had just about decided to purchase a Janome of some type or description. I was just online and saw a machine by the name of Juki. ( My ADD is showing, isn't it?) By the name of it, the machine sounds like it might be Japanese in origin, but I know nothing about it. Can anyone tell me anything about it it? I am not an accomplished seamstress, but I do enjoy sewing, and want to teach my 32 year-old daughter to sew, as well. I've never had much experience with electronic gadgets, but feel it would be nice to be able to do a few things which that type of machine would enable me to do. I will make a final decision in the very near future, so any additonal guidance will be truly appreciated...by my daughter AND me. vandottie
JUKI is a very good brand of machine, and they've been around since the 40s. They are generally considered higher end machines, along with Janomes, Berninas and Elnas. If finances are more of a concern than having a local dealer for sewing lessons, check the prices at allbrands.com for whichever machine you decide to buy.
I would not recommend a new Singer to anyone, since they are made by different companies now and you can no longer depend on the quality of them, depending on the particular model. Kenmores are made by Janome and re-branded so compare the prices of those 2 if that's what you decide on.
Even if you decide to buy on-line test drive different machines at a local store to get a feel for the ones you like and dislike. Make a list of "gotta haves" (needle down, auto buttonhole, etc) and "why waste moneys" (auto thread cutter, knee lift, etc) and try to narrow the search to those options. The list might help make the decision if it comes down to 2 or 3 best choices too.
