Janome Horizon 7700 Quilting and Sewing Machine

When free motion quilting, why is the tension of my stitches on the back side so uneven?
I just got a new sewing machine, a Janome 8050, and have just started free motion quilting. The machine works really well, and usually the tension is really great and even. But when I free motion quilt the tension on the back side is really uneven. Sometimes it is perfect, sometimes it is really tight, and at other places it is really loose - even to the point of leaving big loops of the top thread. Everything looks good on the top. I am wondering if this is normal when starting out with free motion quilting, or if there is something wrong with the machine. I have tightened the tension more, but it still does it. Can anyone help me?
If it is something wrong with the machine I would like to return it while I still can.
Free motion quilting is something that takes a lot of practice. It took me a while. Here's what I do--
Change the presser foot to a darning foot, a hopping foot, or a free motion foot.
Lower your feed dogs. If they won't lower, then cover them with a business card taped over them so they won't grab the material while you're trying to move it.
Change your tension to zero.
Take 2 or 3 stitches in one spot to secure the threads.
Then keeping the machine at a steady speed, move the fabric slowly and smoothly so you don't end up with gaps or overly long stitches. Slow and steady is the key here!
