What is the origin of the Irish Chain quilting pattern?
I am making an Irish Chain quilt for a friend's baby and would love to include a history of this type of pattern for my friend.
Any help or information would be greatly appreciated!

The earliest record of the Irish Chain pattern is in 1806 or 1814, depending on who you ask. It may be the first use of a block as an allover design (as opposed to blocks used as a border in a medallion quilt). By the 1820's it is a common pattern. There was a quilt made by an Irish woman who emigrated to the US around 1807 that is very similar to what we know as the Irish Chain. The difference is in the layout - the blocks are on point so it looks like the chains are framing squares instead of diamonds. The pattern has continued to be popular, in part because it is a relatively easy pattern to piece, and also because it leaves large blank spaces that can showcase decorative quilting.
