What are the differences between a domestic and an industrial sewing machine?
Industrial sewing machines are mostly single stitch sewing machines -- if you want a lock stitch, you buy a lock stitch machine. If you want a bar tack, you buy a bartacker. If you want a buttonhole, you buy a buttonhole machine that can handle the specific type of buttonhole you want (keyhole, straight, fishtail...) Industrial machines tend to have higher presser foot pressure and lower thread tension than home machines, making them less likely to have problems with thread puckering. Most weigh a hundred pounds or more (often much more) with the required table and separate motor, but there are a few portable or semi-portables around. Not all industrial machines are built to handle heavy fabrics -- you can find a machine that will handle only light weight fabrics, or only medium weight or only heavy weight, but not every weight. They sew really well when properly adjusted, are built for long duty cycles and many years of service, and have many, many more specialty feet available than home machines (dirt cheap feet, too!). Many require an oil pan filled with oil to lubricate and cool the sewing head. Presser foot typically operated by a knee lift. Oh, and you're likely to have to learn how to fix most things on your industrial, since they're mostly not portable.

Between "industrial" and "home" machines are the commercial class machines -- built tough, look like something from the mid 20th century, usually only a few stitches; meant for a longer duty cycle than a home machine but a shorter one than an industrial. Often seen in dry cleaning shops or alterationist shops
