Sewing machine needle - which one? Mine just snapped?

Stupid bottom bit of the sewing machine (Empisal Pace Setter) fell out and caused my needle to break. I don't have a spare, or know anything about them.
What do all the numbers mean? Are they universal? What type do I need for turning pants up?

All of the needles used in home sewing machines in the last 45 years are what is known as 130/705H, 15x1H or HAx1 needles (same basic needle, different manufacturers call them different things). If your machine is older than that, you may need a different needle system. Easiest thing to do then is to take the broken needle to a sewing machine dealer or repair shop and have them tell you which needle system you need.

Next thing you need to know is the size of the needle. There are two sizing systems, one metric, and one started by Singer long ago -- they're equivalent, but the numbers are different. Typically, you'll see both needle sizes marked on a package:
size 10/70 needles are good for lightweight fabrics like woven shirts.
size 12/80 needles will sew almost any garment weight fabric, but do best with medium weight... heavy shirts, light pants and skirt fabric.
size 14/90 needles are for heavier pants and skirt fabrics
size 16/100 needles are for very heavy fabrics -- coats, heavy pants, etc.
A needle that is too small for what you're sewing will "skip stitches" -- instead of getting a seam that looks like - - - - it'll look something like - ---- - --- ------- - - - --- If you see that, move up to the next needle size and try again. The object is to poke the smallest hole possible in your fabric and still get good seams.

The final thing to think about is what kind of point the needle needs. You want sharp points for wovens, ballpoints for knits. "Universal points" are light ball points that will sew ok on both wovens and knits.
