How does a sewing machine gathering foot work ?
I have an Elna machine and I see the foot on this website, but wonder, how it works and will it only make tiny gathers like these ? Sewing experts, help, please !

The gathering foot allows slippage of the material against the feed dogs. This slippage allows material to accumulate (gather) since more material is feeding into the foot than is leaving it on the back side.
The limitation is jamming. There is only a certain amount of space under the gathering foot. If too much material accumulates, then NONE of it can leave, resulting in a jam.
Think of it like a funnel: wide opening input and narrow output. If you were to pour water into a funnel at a certain rate of flow, it backs up, since the rate that it can leave is determined by viscosity. Honey would flow out more slowly than water because it's thicker.
Gathering works the same way: thin and medium weight material can be gathered. Heavy material or stiff material, such as house carpet or heavy drapery cannot be gathered at all...it would only stall the machine or jam up the foot.
