Despite their age, Black Singer Featherweight 221 Sewing Machine even of an early vintage can be found in  exceptional condition.  They are usually black and gold in color and often extremely well cared for.

Recently we saw a really good Singer Sewing Featherweight 221 in great condition on eBay.  It was really bright and shiny.  The gold decals were in excellent condition, which is highly unusual for such a vintage sewing machine as the Featherweight machine.  It had the beautiful features of the early model Featherweight 221.  It had the Egyptian scrollwork faceplate, the chrome rimmed handwheel and stitch length regulator plate, and the early un-numbered thread tensioner.  The carry case was very nice and it still had its complete upper tray.  There  host of accessories are included, and even the little Singer oil can!  It has the original Singer manual, and we are including a nicely reproduced copy as well.

I love my 1955 (?) Singer featherweight 221 sewing machine, but becomes increasingly fussy about sewing. I like to find a comparable modern basic Singer preferable model. I do not need anything fancy, but it considered. I would like to pay about $ 200. Any suggestions?

Tell you have a featherweight 221 and will start to salivate! No trade in. Keep the phone and if it does not sell, put it on Ebay and get the asking price, and possibly more.

Singer Tucker Attachment Video Tutorial

I have a brother sewing machine. Why does my bobbin thread wrap around the bobbin casing?

I am positive the thread is in the correct position. When I start to sew, the bobbin thread gets bunched up underneath the fabric and in the machine. When I open it up, the thread is wrapped around the bobbin casing several times. I always have to cut it to free it from the machine. Anyone have a clue what is causing this?

Ensure that the upper thread goes from the first thread guide to the tension assembly, then up to the take-up lever, and down to the needle. As your thread goes between the discs of the tension assembly and starts up to the take-up lever, ensure that it has engaged the check-spring. Another point that should be checked is that the flat-spot on the needle is to the right in the case of machines with the hook in a vertical plane, and to the back in the case of machines with a horizontal plane. The only exception to this rule (on current machines) is the Singer Featherweight model 221 or 222 which has the needle flat facing to the left. Also make sure that the needle is threaded from the left to the right.
If you have a top-drop-in bobbin, make sure the bobbin-case is fully inserted into the hook assembly.

If those are the only possible two choices, pick the one that has adjustable presser foot pressure (if either does). What I'm seeing here is a couple of machines with a lot of bells and whistles that appear to be light on the basics.

I'd love to see you try some other machines and brands out, however. Singer is no longer top of the heap, and I think you'd be doing yourself a disservice not to look around more.

Make buttonholes on all the candidate machines -- on your own fabrics -- bad machines do not make good buttonholes.

What sewing machine should I buy?

My mom and gmom want to buy a new sewing machine for my birthday, but I have no idea I tell you what to get. (Do not want to spend around $ 300, which limits what it can do) Right now I have a singer featherweight old. I'm ready for anything again, but I read so many reviews I'm starting to have things confused. I've looked at Brother, Singer, Bernina, Janome, etc. .. I do not know what to do. Arena a lot of heavy denim and I want something that will last a long time. No need for a lot of fantasy points, but I'd like something I could try some new projects / different. Please help me find a good machine. The only retailer near me sells Bernina and Elna machines.

If you sew well, I would keep it. Depending on the model of the pen, it could be worth big money. Check the value of research and Ebay sales history. Example: Then go to the dealer and tell them what kind of sewing machine you need to do. Try denim. If prices are above your budget, I wonder what the pen will give (...) as a model of exchange. Or, list on eBay for more than the value of trade in what is enough for the make and model choice. Be careful of your sewing machine and will do a good job for many, many years. Use the right needle in the denim and the sewing machine, as silk.

Hello, I bought mine from ebay a few years ago. I lost the first three times I tried, but I learned something on the road. Look for "buy now" prove that first. Check that you have plenty of time (10 days, 21 days) and be sure to read all the fine print in the plugin. Mine also came up a pawn shop ... Try some local pawn shops. Mine was auctioned form an online pawn shop .... deal with them. Last but not least, I've been watching on Craig's List for about 200.00. The holidays are coming, so if you can buy ..... buy now .. tend to peak around the holidays ... If we are not the time to look around. My father worked for the singer in the city Elizabeth NJ for over 40 years. These machines were built to last. Do not give up. Paid 250.00 for mine and that includes shipping. So set a budget and not go on it ... A little patience ..... and very soon you will have a lightweight all yours .. Worth the effort well worth it .... and weight ... Sew happy

About Singer featherweight machines

Many vintage Singer sewing machine featherweight 221 and 222 are still in excellent condition.  When buying make sure all the parts are cleaned, oiled, adjusted and ready to go back to work.  All have should have the original Singer parts.  Most vintage Singer sewing featherweight machines are factory 110 Volt wiring for US use.  When you buy one, you are ready to sit down and sew with.

what is a good brand of sewing machine that doesn't cost a fortune?

How much do you consider "a fortune?" Going too cheap on a sewing machine is asking for problems and frustration. Think of a sewing machine as you would a quality power tool in your garage.

You have to consider if you want to get an electronic machine or a mechanical machine. Personally, I go with mechanical because I never use the fancy electronics such as embroidery cards, etc, and repair costs for electronic machines can be quite hefty. Good electronic machines are probably going to run a little higher cost than the mechanical counterparts.

$150 to $300 range: If she's new to sewing, inexpensive but decent machines are made by Brother and White. My personal favorite is Janome - I got a little portable called the Jem for under $300 but it doesn't have any electronic gizmos or fancy functions. For light use, these brands will be pretty good.

$300 to $1000 range: If she's a more avid seamstress/crafter and will give a machine a good workout, look for brands in the mid-range such as Viking, Singer and Elna. My mid-range machine is a Juki, a very solidly made industrial grade machine that is a true workhorse but doesn't have a lot of bells and whistles.

Over $1000 range: A couple of top-notch brands are Bernina and Pfaff. These are quite nice machines and run from mid- to high- range for expense.

TIP: If you go to a quilt or fabric shop that sells machines, often they will have "trade in" machines that are significantly marked down but in excellent condition. They are thoroughly cleaned and serviced - many times you can find last year's model that someone has "traded in" for a new model.

eBay might not be your best choice. If you buy used, go to a quilt or fabic store first to get the folks there to give you advice - they will be very helpful to you where on eBay you're on your own.

My mother had a Kenmore machine that was the sewing machine from...heck. Not good. Also avoid the new version of the Singer Featherweight. Too many plastic parts. Just my opinion...

Features to look for that I like: needle up/down, automatic threader, large bobbin case, drop-in bobbin, wide throat opening, easy to read dials or displays, at least 3 straight stitch lengths, forward, reverse, zig-zag, button-hole, and blind hem stitches, easy maintenance (sealed parts that don't require oiling), and a walking foot attachment.

If it comes right down to it, you can always go with a gift certificate or cash and set a date to take her shopping so she can choose her own!
