Amish Quilts for sale
Has anyone ever heard of an "Amish Wal-mart"? Been to one?
I was at a flee market a few weeks back and a vendor had a HUGE roll of quilt batting. When I asked how much she wanted for it, she said it wasn't for sale. She told me to hit up an "Amish Wal-mart" because that's where she got hers while visiting Iowa. She said she also got a lot of fresh fruit and veggies at much better prices than at a grocery store.
So, what exactly is an "Amish Wal-mart" and how do you find one? I'm assuming they are ran by Amish people, but I might be wrong on that. Maybe they are for the Amish to do shopping? I don't know, but I sure wouldn't mind being able to by batting and fabric at better prices.
Thanks for any help you might be able to provide!
P.S. I'm in Wisconsin. I've heard there is a large Amish community in the southern part of the state, near the Iowa boarder. Do you think they would have one of these stores? How would I find it?
That is a slang term used for a large variety store that are frequently used by Amish and Mennonites, and are usually Amish or Mennonite owned. Another slang term used to describe these stores is Mennonite Mall. The stores stock clothing and other goods that would be purchased by these people, but they are opened to anyone. There are many of them in Lancaster County, PA.
BTW, The Amish and Mennonites also shop at real Walmarts.

Would a single bed quilt be way too big for a cot bed or would it do ok?
We got our daughter a Dora cot bed and just wondering if a single bed quilt would be too big or ok ? anyone know? xx its dimensions are 140x70cms
It would be way too big and a safety issue. She could easily tangle up in that and not be able to get it off if she does causing her to suffocate.
Look for a TODDLER BED size quilt/comforter that is made for the smaller beds.

how can I square up the northern star quilt sqare?
How big is your block? Do you have a rotary cutting mat? I would lay it on there along the lines to see how square or off square it is? Sometimes I am a little off, so I put a pin at that area and when I sew it to another block or sashing, I know not to put that edge to edge to another block. And sometimes, steam and starch. How accurate was your seam allowance?

Is anyone here from around the Durant, Okla area? I am looking for more info a yearly event ...Amish Auction?
Several years ago we went to an Amish Auction where they sell their quilts, furniture and food. I believe it is a yearly event. I don't remember exactly where it is at but I know that we went east in Durant, Oklahoma. If you have any info I would appreciate it. It is a really neat experience.

how to make a hand made quilt of fabic?
You need to create a top (this will have the design/quilt squares), the middle (batting--your choice of type), and a backing. The quilting is in the joining of these three whether it be by hand, machine, or tied. Once this is completed, you need to add a binding to edge finish the quilt and you are done. The quilt can be as simple or difficult as you wish. I suggest you look through quilt blocks to choose what is attractive to you....something simple so you do not get too frustrated. You can get ideas from googling how to make a quilt or quilt blocks. You might learn how to do this from a local group. In my area there is a group who makes quilts for the local terminally ill named Comfort Quilts. Something like this is a great way to learn how to quilt from some of the best and you can make a lasting gift for another. You can take what you learn home with you to create your own quilt for yourself.
