You would probably have a problem if you chose canvas as the mounting fabric for a silk suit because the?
A. texture of the canvas is too smooth for the silk.
B. stiff canvas would alter the character of the silk garment.
C. canvas is too light in weight to support the silk properly.
D. the color of the canvas wouldn't go with the color of the silk.
The underlining for a suit should stabilize, but not outweigh, the outer fabric. Another consideration is that all fabrics used should be able to be cared for in the same way. Hard to image any fabric being too smooth (or too slippery) for silk, quite the other way around. But your other comments are common to any fabric selection. Underlining shouldn't over power the outer layer, and underlining is often used to make a Sheer Fabric opaque. Sometimes a different color is used to achieve a certain look (it is your choice), but usually a coordinating color is used.
Underlining is a sandwiched layer between the outer fabric and the lining, used to stabilize and add body to the design.
