Why won't my sewing machine pick up the bobbin thread?
I am trying to fix my sewing machine for my mom. 
Problem is, it's not picking up the thread from the bobbin. I use the Brother LS 1217 sewing machine. I have tried over and over again! What can it be?
Please help!
Usual reasons for not picking up the bobbin thread are that the needle is in backwards (backwards needles don't pick up bobbin threads reliably, and skip stitches), the needle is not the correct one for the machine (somewhere on the packet, it should say something about 130/705H, 15x1H or HAx1),
or the needle isn't correctly seated in the needle clamp, or the machine is a little bit out of time.
Are you remembering to hang on to the needle thread when you're trying to pick up the bobbin thread? Are you turning the handwheel in the direction that would advance the fabric from the front to the back of the machine?

If the machine does seem to be out of time, take it in to the repair shop... timing is kind of fiddly and very frustrating unless someone shows you how.
