Buying Embroidery Machine?
I am looking to buy an embroidery machine and have a few questions. I have visited the local sew and vac numerous times and tried out the Brother Innovis 4000. Its great; but very expensive! If this truly what I need then I will work to buy it; but I question whether or not I really need all that. Couldn’t I buy a much cheaper machine and spend a bit more money on software for my computer? This way I would still have the ability to embroider most anything but the majority of the setup would be done on my computer rather than the machine. Is this possible?

I do not have a sewing machine so it will be important to purchase a model that can do both.
So I am getting the feeling that as long as I get a machine with a big field then it doesn't quite matter what design functions are onboard the machine as I can do all that on my computer and simply transfer to the machine. Is this a wise conclusion?
Hi, I worked for a Viking/Pfaff dealer, and a Babylock/Janome dealer, and I own 4 embroidery machines, including a 6 needle. I've worked with many of the machines on the market. Each machine offers something a little different, so the most important questions you need to answer is how do you want to use the macine; what types of designs do you think you will use, and do you want to use large designs? Some machines, such as the one you saw, come with 4 or 5 different hoops, and have more that you can buy. If it would be helpful, I'll put together a checklist to help you figure out what you want for your first machine.
You can find embroidery/sewing machines for less than $1,000, and I think they are great as starter machines. Adding software gives you a huge advantage - you can download designs from the internet and save them on your computer. And you are right, working with designs using software is much easier than trying to change designs on the machine.
The most expensive Innovis threads itself with the the touch of a button. Very cool feature, but you're paying ALOT to get it. I agree with one of the other respondents - look for a used Viking D1 that has a USB connection. (The older D1s take a floppy disk, and that can be a huge hassle.)
