How do I remove mould from fabric?
I have got the moses basket down from the loft ready for the new baby but the quilt with it has a small area of mould on that I only noticed after I washed it so obviously it didn't come out.
I know you can't use a quilt for a newborn but it makes it nice and padded for him to sleep on.
Does anyone know what would be good for removing mould from fabric? Should I boil wash it or will that set it?
Mold and mildew don't survive well in lemon juice, but I'd be more likely to use a med. strong bleach/hot water solution and double rinsing in apple cider vinegar/water, until clean.
I've also heard of a cleaner called Milton's that is supposed to be great for this as well .. I've not heard much other than that and have never seen / used it ..
here's some steps you might try:
- soak in a laundry pre-soak product such as Axion or Biz.
- bleach the spots, but first be sure the bleach method you choose will not change the color of the fabric. I would grab one of those sponge bushes so you can control where you put the bleach down .. or use a q-tip
when you run it through the washer again, check for the stains - it's also been suggested to dry in full sunlight ..
I can't believe I'm saying this about a quilt heh
Use:
- a non-chlorine bleach that is safe for all fabrics.
- a lemon juice and salt solution for colored fabric.
- a mixture of 2 Tablespoons of chlorine bleach in one quart of water. Use hot water if it is safe for the fabric. Never use chlorine bleach on silk or wool, or a fabric that says "no chlorine bleach" on the label.
